About Nutrition Glossary Nutrition Advantages Peronin
The history of Peronin
   Robert Peroni
Robert Peroni
When the first astronauts went up into the orbit, the question arose about the appropriate food for such missions. The requirements made were that it had to be lightweight, quick (ease of use) and longlasting, with all the nutrients available for all the important needs of the body, and that bowel movements were to be reduced to a minimum.

The result was a powder which was made up of medium-chain triglycerides and stirred together with water to form a drink. The body can absorb up to 96% of these medium-chain triglycerides within minutes. The stomach is not required to expend any additional energy in order to breakdown the long-chain molecules which is the case with normal food. It is said that a full stomach draws blood away from the head, making one tired. The tiredness comes from the lack of oxygen within the blood. The high rate of absorbtion means there is very little bodily waste - a consideration when working in sub-zero temperatures.

Therefore 'insiders' going on extreme expeditions, mountaineers, etc, would buy themselves a product by the name of 'Biosorbin' from the chemists. This worked quite well for a while but had its drawbacks - you were always left with a 'hospital' taste in your mouth.

One day, Robert Peroni (Greenland researcher) visited Folker Schultheiss (outdoor food producer), and talked to him about this topic, he was filled with enthusiasm of further developing the concept - the development was ready within two months. It came into the market as a product that was specially designed for the serious outdoor practitioner. Peronin thus came into being using Robert's family name.

Peronin is available in two flavours: vanilla and chocolate. Preparation is simple. Put all the powder for one portion into a container (a screw top container is preferable) stir/shake together with some water then drink.

Sven Riedesel, using Peronin, took 19th place among 1528 participants in the Ironman contest in Hawaii at the end of 1999.
