Can the food be eaten after the 'Best Before Date' ?
Yes - the BBD is a guide as to when the food should still be at it's best. After this date the taste, texture or colour may begin to diminish. In the case of 'Ready to Eat ' foods these are regularly eaten two years after their BBD date. You should however NOT eat these foods if the foil pouch is pierced or the bag is swollen (due to gassing - an extremely rare event).
The secret to the long shelf life is the pouch. All MRE foods are packaged in a triple-layer foil and plastic pouch. The food is sealed in the pouch and then cooked, so it isn't exposed to the air again until the pouch is opened. This process not only sterilizes the food, but also helps keep the natural moisture and juices inside for a more delicious taste.
To get the most storage life out of an MRE, it is best to avoid fluctuating temperatures. Exposing the MRE to extreme temperatures (hot or freezing) will also decrease the shelf life.
• At 120 degrees, an MRE will store for 1 month
• At 110 degrees, 5 months
• At 100 degrees, 22 months
• At 90 degrees, 55 months.
How soon can you deliver ?
U.K. mainland - within 48hrs, overseas - usually within five working days. (Please see commendations in the Carriage section)
Do I need to use sterilising tablets with the water filter ?
If you are using the filter just to remove the taste of chlorine or other tastes then sterilising tablets are not necessary. If, however, you are using the filter with water that may contain harmful bacteria we recommend that you sterilise the water first then put it through the filter-using this method you will remove all the organic matter and most of the taste of the sterilising agent, if not all of it.
Can the Flameless Heater bags be used more than once ?
No. The heating takes place because of a chemical reaction within the heater unit. It can therefore only be used once.
What kinds of meals do we stock?
We have three different kinds of meals: 'Ready to Eat', 'Freeze Dried' and 'Self Heating'.
What is the difference and what are their uses?
Ready to Eat
Known also as 'boil in the bag' and the American terminology 'MRE' -meal ready to eat'.
These meals are sealed in an alufoil pouch, pre-cooked and can be eaten cold if necessary. They are of course usually eaten hot by placing the alufoil pouch in water (any water - it does not have to be clean, as the water does not come into contact with the food) Simmer for 4-8 minutes, remove from the water and dry the bag before opening. Some bags have tear slots others require to be opened with a knife. Then eat straight from the pouch. When clean water is used, many campers use this water to make a brew. These meals are very convenient - ideal for first time campers, emergency food supplies, living on a boat or in a caravan, as they do not require refrigeration. Indeed any application where a quick very tasty meal is required - particularly when clean water is not available to cook freeze dried foods.
Freeze Dried
We have two varieties of freeze dried food: Trekking Mahltzeiten and Drytech Real Expedition Meal.
Trekking Mahltzeiten
Traditional freeze dried food that you cook in a pan by adding water and cooking for approximately 8 minutes - depending upon the meal. These meals come in two standard sizes, single portion and double portion; with the soups in multi portion bags, For major expeditions we can supply these meals in expedition bag sizes, given due notice. These are good sized portion meals and ideal for the experienced outdoor cook, with a wide variety of meals to choose from.
Drytech Real Expedition Meal
These freeze dried foods do not require to be cooked on a stove; the advantage of these meals is that you add boiling, or hot water to the bag, close the bag with the integral zip closure and wait five minutes for your meal to prepare. The food is eaten straight from the bag. These meals also come in two standard sizes - to make meals of 350g and 500g prepared weight. We can also supply in 1kg bags for major expeditions. Very convenient and easy to use, particularly useful for extreme and challenge- event competitors. Take a flask of hot water with you, and you have both a hot meal and drink.
Self Heating Meals
These meals are designed for emergency situations when you require a warm meal but do not have access to a stove. Simple in use -just press the bottom of the pack which bursts a water capsule and the reaction takes place in a few minutes, warming the meal. The meal box comes complete with spoon and napkin. These units weigh approx 650g and are not really suitable for back packing. Ideal for leaving in the boot of a car, on a boat, or in the caravan for an emergency. Used by Mountain Rescue Teams for long call outs.
What Energy Drinks do we sell?
Gpush is the only energy drink we supply, - formulated with Galactose: There are several important features to galactose, which make it useful for us. It does not stimulate a primary release of insulin, meaning it gives much steadier blood sugar levels through time and has a low glycemic index. It is absorbed very quickly, meaning that you can begin to get the energy effects of galactose quickly.
It is stored in the liver where it converts to glycogen, which can be released as energy as the body requires.
There are four elements to Gpush, each serving a particular purpose in the body's requirement during exercise: G1 Hydration -to provide sufficient liquid in the body to prevent the thickening of the blood and as often happens headaches when you are not receiving sufficient oxygen to the brain. Being well hydrated also keeps one more alert and react more readily to situations. G2 - Momentum, supplying that energy the body has been using during the early stages of exercise, G3 Endurance - providing the extras you need after 2 hours of sustained exercise and G4 Recovery formulated to provide rapid recovery, eliminating the feeling of exhaustion and discomfort.
